![]() | 1. The game is played by two teams of two players. Each player throws two bocce balls in each end. Balls used must be the composite ‘Costco’ balls. This is to ensure that players will not have to adjust to different weights and sizes from match to match. |
![]() | 2. The ‘home’ team is the starting team and chooses a colour. Any player on this team chooses the starting area by placing the hula-hoop. This player throws the jack between 6 m (20 ft) and 24 m (79 ft) away. If it is thrown outside these distances the team tries again, a second failure results in the opposing team throwing the jack. |
![]() | 3. Any player from the starting team then throws the first bocce ball. Both feet must remain inside the circle until the ball has made contact with the ground. An illegally thrown bocce ball is removed from play and the jack and other balls are returned to their original positions. |
![]() | 4. Any player on the second team comes inside the circle and throws a bocce ball as described above. Strategies include knocking away the other team's leading ball and throwing the bocce ball nearer to the jack. The ball nearest to the jack leads. |
![]() | 5. It's up to the team not leading to throw until they get a leading ball. Either player (with a remaining ball) may throw. When a team has no bocce balls left the other team throws their remaining balls. |
![]() | 6. When neither team has any bocce balls left the points are counted. The winning team gets as many points as it has balls which are better placed than the best of the losing team. In the example on the left, the "white" team has 3 balls closer to the jack than the nearest ball from the "black" team, and thus gets 3 points. If both teams are tied for the closest ball no points are scored and the end is replayed with the same team starting. |
![]() | 7. An end is over when each team has thrown all of its bocce balls. The scoring team starts a new end, by placing the hula-hoop where the previous end finished, and throwing the jack again. The game continues until one of the teams has accumulated the required points. Games are played to final point total even if it is necessary to exceed the allotted time. |
